Grasslands is a short documentary produced by Luceo as a pilot video for a series centered on the role of public lands in the American experience. The film blends interviews, historical imagery, and on-location videography to explore the complex history of bison, their longstanding importance to native communities, the species’ near extermination, and their subsequent restoration across the American grasslands. My role was in documenting bison release and filming broll, including drone footage.

Synopsis: Irina Popova is a Ukrainian-born senior who has lived in Latvia for 50 years. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the post-Soviet bureaucracy pushed her to take Russian citizenship. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Latvia tightened immigration rules, and a new law requires residents with Russian passports, including Irina, to pass a Latvian language exam to extend their residency. The film follows Irina as she prepares for the test to stay with her family in the only home she has known for decades.
